It was an armed uprising in Cuba that lasted less than a year, between 1879 and 1880. It was the indication that the Peace of the Zanjon had not been the last chapter of the independence struggle. The way the Ten Years' War (1868 - 1878) ended and its political and economic consequences left those who had fought heroically for Cuba's freedom for ten long years dissatisfied.

It is also known as The War of the 68 (Guerra del 68). It was the first of the three wars that were done in Cuba between the years 1868 – 1878. Its plan was to reach the independence of Cuba.  This war started at the sugar refinery in the farm Demajagua on October 10th, 1869. Carlos Manuel de Céspedes was the owner of this place.  There is a significant monument in the place where the farm was and now is the National Park La Demajagua, since 1968.

One of the municipalities in the western Mayabeque province, with an area of 445 square kilometers. The local popular culture is very rich as it is a true mix of syncretism and transculturation, showing elements from the native inhabitants, Spain, the Canary Islands, Africa and China.
