THE CATHEDRAL SQUARE

The Plaza de la Catedral stands out as a site of great tourist attraction. It is described as the most harmonious set of the Cuban capital.

The place where the square is located, in the historic urban center of Havana, was until the beginning of the seventeenth century an astonishing terrain for what was initially known as Plaza de la Ciénaga.

With the passing of time these lands were drained and some buildings were built.

Already by the year of 1623 the plazuela of the Ciénaga was spoken and shortly after 1625 the concession of lots in that place was prohibited in order that the lands for the extension of the place were reserved.

In the Plaza there is from the eighteenth century one of the most important religious buildings of Cuba. It is about the Cathedral.

It was in 1748 that the first stone of what would be the oratory of the sons of Saint Ignatius of the Order of the Jesuits, which would later become the Cathedral of Havana, was placed.

The temple of the Cathedral forms a rectangle of 34 by 36 meters, divided internally by thick pillars in three naves and eight lateral chapels.
