Eligio Sardiñas Montalvo

Born in the neighborhood of Cerro, in Havana, on October 28, 1910 Eligio Sardiñas, who was identified as Kid Chocolate, became a leading figure in Cuban boxing.

In some official documents appears as registered in January 1907. This was due to the fact that to participate years later in a fight of more than eight rounds in the United States of America every boxer must be at least 21 years old and then had to falsify his age before its departure to the North American territory.

Of humble origin and orphan of father from the five years it had to face the accomplishment of diverse works from its adolescence.

He had to clean shoes and sell newspapers in search of the pennies that would alleviate the terrible economic situation of the family.

He felt great inclination for boxing to see the fights that were offered at the Arena Colon., Zulueta Street almost corner Dragones in Havana. There he fought both his brother and other friends in the neighborhood.

That approach and the need to find money, inclined Yiyi, as he was known in the family, for boxing.

Although he participated in an out-of-program championship in advance, his debut came when he was 15 years old and as an amateur he did not lose a single fight in Cuba even though he almost celebrated a hundred matches.

After that brilliant performance he decided together with his manager and friend, Luis Felipe Gutiérrez (Pincho) to move on June 22, 1928 to New York, United States of America.

In that country he celebrated his first fight in a military camp on August 1, 1928.

After winning 13 consecutive victories he made his debut at Madison Square Garden on November 30 of that year.

Some time later supported by a refined style and speed of legs amounted to immortality in pugilism.

He came to hold two world titles in the light and pen divisions. The first was obtained on July 15, 1931 and the second, on October 13, 1932 In the following years began to take place his decline as a boxer.

His last fight was on December 18, 1938. In total, he celebrated more than 200 fights, of which he lost only 10.

Later Kid Chocolate returned to Cuba where he lived until his death in Havana on August 8, 1988.

After the triumph of the Revolution in Cuba in 1959 he was offered offers to move to the United States of America with the aim of using it for propaganda purposes.

He said he preferred to be with the boys in his neighborhood and die among their own.

In 1974 he received a significant emotion. In the Sports City, the opening ceremony of the First Amateur Boxing World Championship was held. When his presence in the Colosseum was announced, thousands of people began to give him a big ovation.

About Kid Chocolate, several works have been written and even a particularly significant book is that of Elio Menéndez and Víctor Joaquín Ortega entitled "Boxing is me", a phrase that he affirmed when summarizing the meaning of boxing in his life.

In Cuba for several years a room of eight thousand square meters of surface and that has six gyms and a multisport stage, existing in the avenue of the Prado in Havana takes the name of Kid Chocolate
