Havana ephemeris. 4th of September.

 1942. Eduardo Moisés Torres Cueva is born in Havana.

He was president of the House of Higher Studies "Don Fernando Ortiz", of the University of Havana. He served as an academic, historian and pedagogue, as well as a Member of the Cuban Academy of Language, Full Professor and Doctor of Historical Sciences. He was also a Researcher and Professor at various faculties of the University of Havana, at the Enrique José Varona Higher Pedagogical Institute and the Higher Institute of Medical Sciences of Havana, among other high educational centers.

For his meritorious work, he has been awarded multiple decorations: The Distinction for National Culture, the Frank País Order, the Fernando Ortiz Medal, the Carlos J. Finlay Order, the National Prize for Social Sciences and also the Prize for History.

He currently chairs the Office of the Martí Program.

 

1966. The essayist Elías Entralgo dies in Havana.

In his professional work he obtained a doctorate in Civil Law, Public Law and Philosophy and Letters at the University of Havana. He was a member of the Section of Historical Sciences of the Athenaeum of Havana, of the Institute of Higher Studies of Cuba, of the Circle of Higher Studies of Rosario, Argentina, and of the International Institute of Ibero-American Studies of Paris, in France.

He also carried out important work as a professor at the University of Havana and also worked as editorial secretary in the magazine of that great student center, as well as in the Cuban Bimestre Magazine.

In the final stage of his existence, he held the positions of dean of the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Havana and President of the Cuban National Commission for UNESCO.

His birth occurred in the Cuban capital on March 28, 1903.

 

1995. Commander in Chief Fidel Castro delivers a speech in the Aula Magna of the University of Havana on the occasion of the start of the 1995-1996 school year and the 50th anniversary of having entered that center for some studies.

He pointed out:

“It was a privilege to enter this university too, without a doubt, because I learned a lot here, and because here I learned perhaps the best things of my life; because here I discovered the best ideas of our time, because here I became a revolutionary”.

 

1997. The young Italian tourist Fabio di Celmo dies in Havana.

His death occurred as a result of an explosive device planted in the Copacabana hotel by a mercenary hired by the terrorist Luís Posada Carriles.

His birth had taken place in Genoa, Italy, on June 1, 1965.

 

2005.  Commander in Chief Fidel Castro holds a meeting in Havana with 1,586 doctors who were prepared to provide solidarity aid to Americans affected by Hurricane Katrina. This contingent is identified with the name of Henry Reeve, a young North American who contributed to the development of the fight for the independence of Cuba in the 19th century.
