Havana ephemeris. 17 of August.

1937. José Ramón Rodríguez López is born in Havana.

From a very young age he showed his interest in sports disciplines. He primarily excelled in judo, where he achieved Black Belt. He also participated in Chess tournaments where he won various prizes.

He began the revolutionary work as a result of turning 15 years old. From that moment he knew how to assume responsibilities that made him one of the young people most persecuted by the henchmen of the Batista dictatorship.

He created and organized the Student Federation of Private Teaching Centers. This organization had hundreds of members in its ranks who carried out important activities in the struggle for the liberation of the country. He also organized cell No. 8 of resistance and sabotage of the July 26 Movement in Havana.

He died on August 11, 1957, as a result of the wound suffered several days before, when he was attacked by the repressive forces of the Batista dictatorship.

He is the distinguished patriot of the Plaza de la Revolución municipality.

 

1988. Coralia Fernández dies in Havana.

She begins by participating in school parties and activities sponsored by the Liceo de Regla, while she learns the elementary notions to sing the punto guajiro. At the age of 14, she performed some songs in a Sunday children's program on Cuban radio.

She excelled from the 1940s until her passing. She was the wife of another peasant music singer, Ramón Veloz, with whom she formed a well-known duo of recognized quality. During the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista, she and her husband sang songs that reflected and denounced the situation of poverty and misery experienced by the Cuban people.

After the triumph of the Revolution, she gave her contribution to the Palmas y Cañas program on Cuban television, as a host and in a relationship with Ramón Veloz.

Her birth took place in the town of Regla, Havana, on August 23, 1927.
