Havana ephemeris. August 9.

1963. The Second Congress of the National Association of Small Farmers, ANAP, is closed at the Charles Chaplin Theater in Havana.

In the final part of his speech, Commander in Chief Fidel Castro pointed out: “And just like in the war, just like in the war, the peasants shed their blood for the triumph of the Revolution, for the triumph of the proletariat, the Peasants in the construction of socialism, in the construction of the new homeland, in the construction of a happy future, will be together with the workers and will give every last drop of their creative sweat and every last drop of their patriotic blood.”

 

1976. José Lezama Lima dies in Havana.

Born in Havana on December 19, 1910, his full name was José María Andrés Fernando Lezama Lima.

From a very young age he began to demonstrate his abilities in the field of literature and particularly in relation to poetry.

He was the author, among other works, of the book Paradiso, a novel that placed him in the center of attention in the intellectual sphere of Cuba and also internationally.

It has been said of this work that it is a learning novel as it reflects the transition of its protagonist, from childhood to adolescence, his intellectual initiation, the discovery of friendship and sexuality and finally the encounter with his teacher. This novel also offers an impressive image of Cuban society in the first half of the twentieth century.

He was born in Havana on December 19, 1910.

 

1999. Fidel speaks at the Karl Marx Theater at the graduation ceremony for students from the Higher Institute of Medical Sciences in Havana.

He states: "... we are living one of the most glorious times of Cuban medicine, and I say it with reason, I say it because I am absolutely convinced of it."

He also expresses: "We have a huge contingent of doctors, very young, very new, who will have more and more knowledge."

He refers to doctors who are carrying out internationalist missions on a nearby island as well as on a distant continent. And he emphasizes: “We dream of a better world, a fairer world, a truly more humane world for which we all have a duty to fight.”
