1938. Carmen Emilia Barberis is born in Havana.

During her childhood she sang in different local stations, which at the time existed in the Cuban capital.

In 1950 she headed the list of the founders of Cuban Television, in a program hosted by Dolores, Lolita, Berrio. She reappears on television in 1954 in a program called "El guateque de Apolonio", directed by José Zanabria. On the radio she was present on Radio Progreso, Cadena Roja and Radio Cadena Habana.

Known in the artistic world as Carmelina Barberis, she was considered one of the most characteristic female voices of our Guajira music. She traveled through various countries representing country music alongside various Cuban artists.

 

1964. Doctor Emilio Roig de Leuchsenring dies in Havana. He was the founding Director of the Office of the Historian of the City of Havana

Through its existence, it made a notable contribution to the development of research and the dissemination of the history of Havana. He also carried out significant work both in the field of investigation and in journalism.

He gave multiple conferences, organized events of a historical nature and wrote several books..

His birth took place in Havana on August 23, 1889.

 

1980. Mirta Aguirre Carreras dies in Havana.

She came to literature in a self-taught way and was a famous poetess. In 1947 she won a significant prize in the Ibero-American Floral Games with her work Influence of Women in Ibero-American. She also carried out during her life an intense and fruitful activity as a revolutionary intellectual.

She was the first military intellectual woman in Cuba in the ranks of the Communist Party. She later was one of the founding members of the Sociedad Cultural Nuestro Tiempo.

She was born in Havana on October 18, 1912.

 

1981. Juan David, considered one of the world's great personal cartoonists, dies in Havana.

Born in 1911 in the area of ​​Sietecitos, a town near Sagua la Grande, it was at the age of fourteen that he received his first drawing classes. In 1927 he created the first cartoon. He reflected multiple Cuban and foreign figures, and many of his caricatures appeared in the most important Cuban newspapers and magazines, as well as were shown in personal exhibitions.

Beyond his work as a creator, after 1959 he also performed functions as a diplomat. He also worked as a professor of Cuban art at the Higher Institute of Art and until his death he continued to work at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cuba.

He was born in Cienfuegos on April 25, 1911.

 

1988. Eligio Sardiñas, “Kid Chocolate”, dies in Havana.

Of humble origins and fatherless, he had to face various jobs since his adolescence. He felt a great inclination for boxing when he saw the fights that were offered at the Arena Colón, in Havana. His debut came when he was 15 years old and as an amateur he did not lose a single fight in Cuba despite the fact that he held almost a hundred matches. After that brilliant performance he decided together with his manager and friend, Luis Felipe Gutiérrez (Pincho) to move on June 22, 1928 to New York, United States of America. He made his debut at Madison Square Garden on November 30, 1928. Sometime later, supported by a refined style and leg speed, he rose to immortality in boxing. He went on to hold two world titles in the lightweight and featherweight divisions. The first was obtained on July 15, 1931 and the second, on October 13, 1932

Later Kid Chocolate returned to Cuba where he lived until his death in the Cuban capital.
