1992. The poet Ada Elba Pérez dies in Havana.
Her birth had taken place on September 20, 1961 in Jarahueca, a small town in the Yaguajay municipality, in the current province of Sanctí Spíritus.
After finishing her studies, she developed a fruitful fundamental work in the Isle of Youth and in Havana. In 1982, she joined the "Hermanos Saiz" Brigade made up of young Cuban creators. With her literary works, she achieved various awards in Cuba and abroad. In 1988 she was invited by the Ateneo de Caracas and the Maracaibo Art Museum to exhibit her pictorial work. In 1991 she participated in the "Homage to Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz" event in Mexico.
Among the themes addressed in her works, the song to the land that the peasant tills, internationalism, optimism and love for her hometown stand out. Several months after her death on the occasion of the celebration in Cuba of the Art Instructor's Day (February 18), she was conferred post-mortem the "Raúl Gómez García" medal and the April Prize.
She was described as one of the most fertile voices of Cuban letters.
2003. Máximo Francisco Repilado Muñoz dies in Havana.
Known in the artistic world by the pseudonym of Compay Segundo, he was an outstanding guitarist, clarinetist, singer and composer, with more than one hundred creations. Of his authorship there are sones, guarachas, boleros and songs, with rich Caribbean nuances.
His voice, deep and round, accompanied famous singers of international fame. With his group he was able to get crowds from several continents to dance. His works include Sarandonga, Chan Chan and Saludos Compay.
In 1998 he actively participated in the recording of the Buena Vista Social Club album that reached the Latin Grammy.
Due to his commendable work in the artistic world, he received different recognitions and, of course, the applause of audiences in Cuba and different parts of the world, in addition to the praise of critics and other specialists. Among the decorations that were conferred on him are the Order "Félix Varela of First Degree", and the "Replica of the Machete of Generalissimo Máximo Gómez".
His birth took place in the town of Siboney, near Santiago de Cuba, on November 18, 1907.
2007. José Llanusa Gobel dies in Havana.
In his sports career, he competed in the London Olympic Games in 1948, as a member of the Cuban National Basketball Team. Later, with his teammates, he obtained a bronze medal at the Pan American Games in Guatemala in 1950. He was the coach of the basketball team that represented Cuba at the Central American Games in Mexico in 1954.
After the triumph of the Revolution he was President of the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation, INDER.
He also served as Minister of Education, Vice President of the Council of Ministers and Deputy to the National Assembly of People's Power.
For his contribution to revolutionary sports, he was awarded the title of Doctor Honoris Causa in Physical Culture and Sports Sciences.
