1817. Ramón Zambrana is born in Havana.

Doctor Ramón Zambrana Valdés

A forerunner of forensic medicine, he left a lasting mark on Cuban medical science. He was the first Cuban to receive the title of Doctor of Medicine and Surgery. In addition, together with Dr. Nicolás José Gutiérrez Hernández, he founded the first Cuban medical magazine named "Habanero Medical Repertory", which circulated between 1840 and 1845. In 1842 Zambrana ceased his work in that magazine.

Both his scientific works and his literary work were published in various Cuban newspapers and magazines of the time.

In addition to being a doctor, he was a professor, writer, poet, literary critic and journalist.

His death occurred in Havana on March 18, 1866, when he was only 48 years old. His corpse was exhibited in the Aula Magna of the University of Havana, the same place where he exhibited his scientific work so many times.

2007. Dr. John Evelio Gay Rodríguez dies in Havana.

He was born in the city of Matanzas in 1936. He graduated as a Doctor of Medicine at the University of Havana in 1962.

He performed the Rural Medical Service in the province of Camagüey. In 1966 he received the title of Nutrition Specialist, after completing the Pediatric Residency. In 1984 he achieved the degree of Doctor of Medical Sciences at the Academy of Medical Sciences of the then Soviet Union, as well as the category of Senior Researcher at the Cuban Academy of Sciences.

He was the founder of the Institute of Nutrition and Food Hygiene of Cuba, which was created on December 21, 1976, but it was not until 1984 that it became an institution for research and training of human resources in this specialty.

From the beginning, its purposes and objectives were to develop the basic aspects of community nutrition, food and nutritional surveillance, diagnosis of the nutritional status of the population and essential aspects of clinical nutrition, which together with food hygiene, were the fundamental pillars for the development and progress of the institution as a Research Center in the context of the country's Ministry of Public Health.
