Hortensia Pichardo

Dr. Hortensia Pichardo stood out in a remarkable way for the studies made in the field of the history of our country and also for her work as a teacher.

She obtained the title of Doctor in Historical Sciences, as well as in Pedagogy and in Philosophy and Letters.

His birth took place in Havana on January 22, 1904.

Speaking of Hortensia Pichardo is talking about the history of the country. And it is that in this woman the exercise of the magisterium was combined with an exemplary life full of authentic Cubanness.

It is considered as the cornerstone of Cuban historiography. La Pichardo educated in the classroom, in the archive, even at home when she was visited by students and friends.

It was also cataloged as a paradigm as a teacher in the history of Cuba, not only for its dedication to teaching but also for the dissemination of the historical knowledge that it assumed as a true apostolate.

He reflected his research and knowledge in works that are a must for specialists and others interested in knowing aspects of Cuba.
Hortensia Pichardo graduated first in the Normal School of Teachers and later in the University of Havana in the specialties of pedagogy and philosophy and letters.

He taught for almost two decades at the Instituto de la Víbora and from 1961 he worked at the University of Havana.
In this center he taught Historiography and Theory of Research.

His main contributions to education are presented in the research work on Cuban subjects in the archives and archives of the United States, in the National Archive, in the library of the Economic Society of Friends of the Country, in the Municipal Archive and in the Museum of Santiago de Cuba, whose results he published with his husband, Dr. Fernando Portuondo, and which are a mandatory reference for teachers and students.

Dr. Pichardo was an active participant in the National History Congresses and was founder of the National Union of Historians of Cuba.
She also collaborated with different national newspapers and magazines.

Among her most significant works are the titled Writings of Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, made in collaboration with her husband, as well as Documents for the History of Cuba and Two historical dates.

For his meritorious work he received numerous recognitions and decorations from the Cuban Government, mass organizations and scientific and academic institutions.

In 1997 he was awarded the National History Award. She was also granted the status of Professor of Merit of the University of Havana and Heroin of the Work of the Republic of Cuba.

Hortensia Pichardo had a long and fruitful life since she died in the Cuban capital on June 21, 2001 when she was 97 years old.
