Nicolás José Gutiérrez y Hernández is born.

During his ninety years of life he contributed much of his knowledge to Cuban science. Given his experience as a surgeon, he performed many risky operations and was the first to use chloroform as an anesthetic in the country. He was the founder in 1840 of the Repertorio Médico Habanero, the first medical magazine circulating in Cuba. He appears as author in many articles. Publishes a manual of operative medicine used for several years as a textbook in surgery.
