He was a soldier in the Rebel Army . After the revolutionary triumph he got the title of Hero of the Republic of Cuba . He was a member of the Board of the Communist Party of Cuba and Representative of the National Assembly of People´s Power, and also Vice President of the council of State and Minister of the Revolutionary Armed Forces. His ashes were placed in the Mausoleo del II Frente Oriental Frank País as was his last will, in a military ceremony.

It is located in the current province of Santiago de Cuba and is a place of high historical significance which has been declared as National Monument. An eternal flame that reflects the memory and the honor of the people to the heroes of the country blazes at the Mausoleum built for the heroic soldiers who felt in the Segundo Frente Oriental “Frank País”. The Mausoleum was built some hundred meters from what originally was the command headquarters of the Segundo Frente during the national liberation fight. It was opened on March11th, 1978.
