The Major General Calixto García Martínez dies.

He took part in the attack to the Carlos Manuel de Céspedes Garrison in Bayamo, in 1953 and a member of the expedition of Granma Yatch in 1956. T the triumph of the Revolution he had important positions such as: Head of the East and Central Armies, of the Direction of the Rearguard in the Revolutionary Armed Forces and of the Mayor State of the Group of Defense Troops for Havana. In 1973 he was the Head of the Military Department  Party Central Committee.

Carlos Manuel de Céspedes Garrison

Part of the plan designed by Fidel Castro to fight Fulgencio Batista dictatorship was the possible occupation of Carlos Manuel de Céspedes Garrison by the revolutionary young people, on July 26th , 1953.  The attack to Carlos Manuel de Céspedes Garrison aimed at avoiding the sending of troops and military equipments from Bayamo to the city of Santiago. Nevertheless it did not happened in the foreseen way, as the revolutionary soldiers were uncovered when trying to enter the place from the back.

Bayamo 

It was the second village to be founded in Cuba by the Governor Diego Velázquez on November 5th, 1513 and San Salvador de Bayamo was its first name. The place is considered The Cradle of the Cuban Nationality, where the National Anthem of Cuba was sang for the first time. Its urban historical center was declared National Monument on October 10th, 1978.
