José Agustín Caballero y Rodríguez de la Barrera was born in Havana.

He was a man of science and in his works he showed his concern for the country´s backward state concerning education, science and illustration. He influenced in the reborn of the philosophical concern with his new doctrines, in education as well as everything related to public morality. He promoted cultural changes and was the first to find a course to philosophy. He was the most important figure of the Philosophical Reform in the island. He headed his efforts to the critic of scholasticism on one hand and on the other to the introduction of the modern philosophy.
