His birth took place in Santiago de los Caballeros, Santo Domingo, on December 26th, 1799. When he was two years old his family settles in Cuba, in Santa María de Puerto Príncipe, today Camagüey, where he begins his first studies.  His first geographic work was  ( Itinerary of the Cuban Island). Cartography was crucial in his life. He draw Mapa general de Cuba (General Map of Cuba) at a minor scale and in 1840 he started to draw a map of Matanzas and another of the Western Region in four sheets that came to see the light in 1853. He received several recognitions because of his scientific work. He was considered an outstanding geographer of Cuba in the nineteen century.

It was a work created by Esteban Pichardo that was completed at the end of an expedition in the central region and in important places in the east of the island. He compiled descriptive and statistician topographic data that were improved adding Camaguey and the western region.
