Aida Pelayo Pelayo

Aida Pelayo was born on October 9th, 1912 in Matanzas She started school in her province but when she was seven her family moved to Havana. Years later when she was young he joined a school adjoin the Normal for Teachers.  She knew about the history of Cuba and Jose Marti there. Subsequently she worked as a primary teacher in the Cuban capital. She not only taught children but also helped in the education of adults who were illiterate. 

She was an outstanding pedagogue and a fighter for the revolution and for the ideas of Jose Marti. She was an important agent in the creation, in our country of the Civic Front of Women in Marti Centenary (Frente Cívico de Mujeres del Centenario Martiano). This association played an important role in the confrontation against Fulgencio Batista dictatorship.

Aida Pelayo joined the Directorio Estudiantil Normalista (students’ organization) and took part in the fights against Gerardo Machado dictatorship and all the social acts of injustice with the passion which was her feature. She was part of the Ala Izquierda Estudiantil (students’ organization) and after the collapse of the dictator Machado she joined the Liga Juvenil Comunista (organization). Aida had a determined position in events and demonstrations and in the distribution of revolutionary propaganda.  She also joined forces with the members of the Movimiento 26 de Julio and the Directorio Revolucionario.

The Civic Front of Women in Marti Centenary disappeared as an organization on January 28th, 1959; after having fought against Batista dictatorship and after the triumph of the revolution. It was at an event close to the monument which preserves Jose Marti´s remains in Santa Ifigenia Cemetery.

Aida Pelayo, as many of the women who were part of that patriotic front carried out other activities, with the aim of helping the development of the Revolution                       from that moment on.  They started to be part of different organizations that were created in the course of time. Some of them were:  the Federation of Cuban Women and the it is a people’s organization to protect the revolution. They were created in every block. She died in Havana on March 26th, 1998.

It was a Cuban organization created in 1952. It had an active participation in the people´s fight against Fulgencio Batista dictatorship.
