Thelvia Marín Mederos passed away in Havana.

She was born on August 28, 1922 in the city of Sancti Spíritus, in the then Las Villas province.  She was an outstanding intellectual, sculptor, painter, poet, psychologist, journalist and writer. Due to her vocation, ideology and revolutionary identity, several of her works were essentially related to historical events and characters of Cuba. She obtained, among other awards, the distinction The utility of virtue, the highest recognition granted by the José Martí Cultural Society to personalities and institutions with an outstanding trajectory in the promotion of Marti's work.

Sancti Spíritus

It was the fifth town created by the Spaniards in the initial stage of the 16th century when they carried out the colonization of the Cuban territory. It was founded in 1514 by the Adelantado Diego Velázquez on the banks of the Tuinucú River, in the so-called town of Pueblo Viejo, about eight kilometers from its present location.  In 1522 it was moved to the banks of the Yayabo River. Sanctí Spíritus is located in the central part of Cuba about 350 kilometers east of Havana. It is the main city of the municipality and the province identified by the same name.

José Martí Cultural Society

It was created in Havana on October 20, 1995 by the initiative of a group of outstanding Martianos in order to develop activities aimed at promoting the dissemination of the life and work of the Apostle of Independence and National Hero of Cuba. It has its national headquarters on 17th Street corner D, in Vedado, Plaza municipality, Havana. Its founding President was Dr. Armando Hart Dávalos who held that responsibility until his death on November 26, 2017, and currently the President of the Society is Dr. Eduardo Torres Cuevas, who is also General Director of the Office of the Martiano Program. The Society awards the following recognitions: "La Utilidad de la Virtud", "Honrar, honra" and "Periódico Patria."

Nos unimos al dolor familiar, de amigos e intelectuales. La conocimos y admiramos por sus obras en la tierra Yayabera. Y deseo reiterar que Sancti Spíritus es la cuarta villa de Cuba, sin demeritar los estudios de los hermanos camagüeyanos. Los documentos de los Archivos de India, los estudios de sobresalientes historiadores dejan muy claro está pifia "rectificadora" que en vez de aportar desdice de grandes hombres de historia incluyendo relatos de conquistadores e incluyó al Padre Las Casa.
