Romana Elena Burguez González passed away.

Known in the musical world as Elena Burke, she was called "La Señora Sentimiento" (Mrs. Feeling), for her peculiar way of interpreting boleros and romantic songs, besides being considered one of the most emblematic voices of the Cuban song. She is among the most representative figures of the feeling movement that emerged in the so-called Alley Hammel. She was among the members of the D'Aida Quartet which marked a milestone in Cuban music.

Feeling Movement

It is a genre of Cuban song that has a notable influence of North American music.  It is related to feeling and emotion. It represented a renovating movement with strong troubadour roots. Hammel Alley Located in the neighborhood of Cayo Hueso, in the municipality of Centro Habana, the Hammel Alley is a place of great attraction for an exotic mural of expressive intentions, representative of the rich heritage bequeathed to Cuba by Africa. This place owes its fame to the work of painter Salvador Gonzalez who, influenced by the African heritage of our culture, created the most picturesque, grandiose and participatory tribute to the black grandparents, with their beliefs, rites and legacies.

Hammel Alley

D'Aida Quartet

It was an all-female quartet that achieved great popularity both in our country and internationally. Founded in 1952, this group became one of the most significant and transcendental groups of its kind in Cuban popular music. It was formed by: Elena Burke, Haydée Portuondo, Omara Portuondo, Moraima Secada and its founder Aida Diestro.
