Roberto Fernández Retamar is born in the La Víbora neighborhood in Havana.

He was a prestigious poet, essayist, literary critic and professor. He pointed out that his poetry was what he loved most in his literary work and his satisfaction was not so much in what he had written as in the very fact of being a writer. He was the founding director of the Center for Martí studies . He was the author of several books of poems and essays. He was also President of Casa de las Americas. His poetry was inspired by history, the Revolution, family, friends, friendship and other contemporary events. Retamar died in Havana on July 20, 2019 at the age of 89.

It is a popular council of the Diez de Octubre municipality. Its main streets are Calzada Diez de Octubre in the east, Santa Catalina Avenue in the south and General Lacret Avenue in the north. This area was founded in 1689; in its origins it was a small town where horses were relieved from the stagecoaches that went from Havana to Güines. Then the population grew rapidly and began to appear in local maps and chronicles. Today, it is the most populated neighborhood in Havana, with nearly 250,000 inhabitants.

The Center for Martí Studies

 It is a prestigious Cuban institution directly related to the life and work of the man who is considered our National Hero.  This institution is also in charge of processing the original manuscripts, works and photographs of Martí, which, as the most precious treasure of our historical-cultural heritage, were granted the status of National Monument.
