He got a degree in Medicine at the University of Havana in 1954.He started his political activities since the coup de état on March 10th, 1952. He was an active member of a clandestine cell of the Movement 26 of July (Movimiento 26 de Julio) at the Maternity Hospital America Arias , where he worked. He was a commander-doctor of the Rebel Army. After the triumph of the Revolution he was the Head of the Air Force, Head of the Mayor State of the Army, Department of the Interior and the Ministry of Public Health.

Maternity Hospital America Arias

It was opened on December 25, in 1930.It is located in the area between G, H and Linea streets in a neighborhood called Vedado, in the Municipality of Plaza de la Revolucion. The building has a rectangular design with a central rotunda around it; arranged by pillars of romantic influence that end in crystals of different colors.  The interior patios ventilate halls, laboratories, doctors´ offices among other spaces which are around them.
