He was born on October 16th, 1868 in the town of Ceiba Mocha in the province of Matanzas. He was the most popular play writer of Cuba. He founded the magazine Luz y Sombra and was one of the most famous and respected editors of Figaro. He collaborated with other publications. He wrote several books since 1892, when he published “Por esos mundos. Impresiones de un viaje”. Another book was “La Guerra de independencia”. He died on November 11th, 1954.

He was a Spanish military man and Captain General of Cuba since 1771 to 1777. During his term of office he finished the construction of the Castillo de Atarés and La Cabaña Fortress and started the Castillo Del Príncipe. He organized the farm and income system, improving the urban conditions of the big cities, street lighting, paving and public health. The Coliseo, called El Principal, and was opened during his mandate as well as the Alameda de Paula. It was the first theater of Havana, made up of masonry and wood.

 

He died in San Agustin de la Florida on February 25th, 1853. It was the place where he lived in his exile time when trying to find the adequate climate to face the disease he was suffering from since years ago. Father Felix Varela was considered the first revolutionary intellectual, the man who taught us to think, as one of his students said. Felix Varela was born on November 20th, 1788. He was one of the most famous figures of the 19th Century. He supported the needed disconnection of Cuba from Spain, the fight for the independence, the abolition of slavery as well as the radical modernization of teaching in our territory.
