The historical and scientific value of the museum is endorsed by the fact of being the first of its kind founded in Cuba as well as the originality of its collections and the presence of specimens that have the exclusivity of having been collected mostly by world-class scientists. The museum was inaugurated on May 26, 1964 in homage to the anniversary of the birth of this internationally renowned naturalist.

Felipe Poey and Aloy, earned the right for his meritorious work of appearing among eminent servants of humanity. In addition to his outstanding work as a scientist and naturalist, he was a brilliant lawyer, an inspired poet and a keen man of manners. From the stage of his youth, Poey was inclined to natural history and in this field he combined his activities as a researcher and teacher. He was the creator of numerous works, such as "Cuban Ichthyology", considered his masterpiece, and which was awarded a gold medal at the exhibition in Amsterdam, Holland, in 1884.

Felipe Poey, born in Havana on May 26, 1799, stood out as a leading figure in the history of the natural sciences in Cuba in the nineteenth century.

His first scientific work was related to the Cuban butterflies.

In 1861, when the Academy of Medical, Physical and Natural Sciences, the first of its kind in the entire continent, was established in Havana, Poey was among its founding members. Shortly after in 1877, the Anthropological Society was founded and will be its first president. He was also Partner of Merit of the Economic Society of Friends of the Country
Felipe Poey and Aloy died in 1891 at the age of 92 years.
