Social works are planned for Havana's 503rd anniversary

Just as Havana celebrates its 503rd anniversary on November 16, the Office of the Historian of the City (OHC) will inaugurate social and cultural works for the benefit of the city's residents and visitors.

In a press conference, Johanna Aedo Gutiérrez, director of Investments of the OHC, said that the entity is working hard to make the capital city look its best during its birthday, always hand in hand with heritage.

Aedo Gutiérrez affirmed that 13 homes will be delivered in the Narciso López building, a building that will be converted on the first floor into the headquarters of the project Culture in our hands, for people with hearing disabilities.

She pointed out that several families will benefit on San Ignacio Street in Havana's Historic Center, while work is also being done on the illumination of Avenida del Puerto and the Malecón.

The OHC Investment Director announced that the Sea Wall, an archaeological heritage in which the Office carried out meticulous excavations for its recovery and exhibition for the five centuries of the city in 2019, will be exhibited for the date.

He said that there will be a special tour of the so-called Golden Kilometer of the Historic Center, which includes the three foundational squares of the city: the Cathedral, San Francisco and Vieja.

On that route, visitors will enjoy Havana's accessibility project, where inclusion and closeness to visitors are a priority, said Aedo Gutiérrez.

From the cultural point of view, the Patria Amada hall will be inaugurated at the Eusebio Leal Spengler House, located at 65 Amargura Street.

According to Aedo Gutiérrez, the Directorate of Investments will accompany all the activities planned for November 16, mainly the one called "Memory of Stones", which consists of accessing through a quick response code (QR) to the history of the institutions told by Leal Spengler.

He pointed out that the Avenida de los Presidentes, also known as G Street in El Vedado, will be adorned with busts, fountains and sculptures as a continuation of the process initiated in September, when the monument to José Miguel Gómez was reopened.

The celebrations for the founding of the capital will last until January 2023, the 295th anniversary of the creation of the Royal and Pontifical University of San Geronimo de La Habana and the 170th anniversary of the birth of Jose Marti, Cuba's National Hero.

Aedo Gutiérrez explained that the official headquarters of institutions such as the Cuban Academy of Language, the Esteban Salas Musical Heritage Cabinet and the Ars Longa Ancient Music Ensemble will return to the University College of that historic house of higher studies.

Finally, he expressed that these works are the result of sustained maintenance by the OHC, despite the years of COVID-19 pandemic.
