Havana ephemeris. October 5th.

 1775. Francisco Covarrubias is born in Havana.

He received a careful education from an early age. He studied Latin, philosophy, surgery and anatomy. From a young age he began to act in comedies that he presented at his friends' houses. The theater motivated him in such a way that he decided to abandon medicine. He had the opportunity to appear in different Cuban theaters and such was his acceptance that he became the most popular actor of his time.

He was cataloged as the creator of the so-called Cuban boy genre, having adapted the Spanish steps, skits and hors d'oeuvres to the national environment. He was closely associated with the theater

His death occurred in Havana on June 22, 1850.

 

1924. Aurelio Reynoso is born in Havana.

He started out singing on radio shows. In 1948 he was part of the Quartet organized by the notable pianist and composer Orlando de la Rosa, with whom he was until 1955. He performed in various Latin American countries. Later he performed as a soloist. He essentially sang romantic songs.. Throughout his career he recorded several long-playing records.

He died in the Cuban capital on January 4, 1987.

 

1925.  Julio Antonio Mella was expelled from the University of Havana.

Upon being separated from the great teaching center, the outstanding student leader, in a letter addressed to the management of that institution, stated: "I am leaving the University satisfied that I have served my ideals at all times and that I have not given up."

On September 25, under the pretext of serious insults to a university authority, his separation from the center had been decreed. Mella had argued with a professor at the Law School who had intentionally failed his wife in an exam.
