Havana ephemeris. October 3.

 1862. Cándido Hoyos Huguet was born in the town of Tapaste, then province of Havana.

In his professional work, graduated as a doctor, he was assistant to the chair of Hygiene and Legal Medicine at the University of Havana, president of the Provincial Council and Governor, both of the Cuban capital from 1904 to 1906. He was among the founders of the School of Arts and Crafts of Havana and was the creator of different scholarships. He was a member of the Friends of the Country Economic Society. In his literary production he published several books in which the following titles stand out: "Establishment of Provincial Agricultural Farms for degenerate children", "Education of Children's language", "Role of the doctor in the postal newspaper press" and "The Discovery of Finlay from the social point of view”.

 

1882.Jacobo de la Pezuela y Lobo dies in Havana.

He was considered one of the classics of the history of Cuba in the 19th century, due to the studies he carried out about the country.

For his Historical Essay on the Island of Cuba, he was named a member of the Royal Economic Society of Havana. He also received an award from the institution and was rewarded with the status of number member of said entity. In 1847 he moved to Europe, where he devoted himself to searching for data on Cuba in Spain, France and England.

He was born on July 24, 1811 in Cádiz, Spain.

 

1929.The Day of Latin American Dentistry is celebrated for the first time in Cuba.

At the second congress of the Latin American Odontological Federation (FOLA) held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1925, it was proposed that in honor of the emergence of that organization, eight years ago, every October 3 Latin American Odontology Day would be celebrated. A flag and a shield were created to identify the organization. In the country, the Cuban dentist, Dr. Antonio Recasens Garrido, in a session of the Cuban Dental Society in February 1925, proposed that the Latin American Dentistry Day be celebrated in the national territory every October 3.

 

1947. Dr. Sergio García Marruz dies in Havana.

In his professional career as a doctor he held different responsibilities. Head of Postnatal Care of the Child Hygiene Service of Havana, midwife surgeon at the General Fernando Freyre de Andrade and América Arias Maternity hospitals, and head of clinic at the Doctor Eusebio Hernández Obrera Maternity Hospital. He was also Minister of Health and Assistance and President of the Cuban Red Cross.

His work as a teacher began in the specialty of Obstetrics at the nursing school of the Calixto García General Hospital and later he was a teacher at the School of Midwives at the hospital itself. Later he served as a teacher and Director of the School of Midwives.

He was among the members of the Academy of Medical, Physical and Natural Sciences of Havana, the Society of Clinical Studies of Havana and the Cuban Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and is also part of various institutions in dissimilar countries.

His birth took place in Havana on January 1, 1886.

 

1965. Commander in Chief Fidel Castro delivers a speech at the presentation ceremony of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, held at the Chaplin Theater, today the Karl Marx Theater.

He points out: “The whole country has received with joy and enthusiasm the news of the constitution of our Central Committee. The names of the comrades who make up this Committee, as well as their history, are well known. If not everyone is known to everyone, everyone is known to a considerable and important part of the people. We have tried to choose those who, in our opinion, represent, in the most complete way, the history of our Revolution, who, both in the struggle for the Revolution and in the struggle for the consolidation, defense and development of the Revolution, have worked and they have fought tenaciously and tirelessly.”

On that occasion, Fidel, when explaining why Commander Ernesto Che Guevara was not a member of that Central Committee of the Party, revealed the farewell letter that Che had given him before leaving Cuba to make his internationalist contribution to the struggle of others peoples in the world.


2010.  Ruth de la Torriente Brau dies in Havana.

She was a teacher by profession who dedicated most of her existence to caring for the legacy of her brother Pablo de Ella, who fought and died in Spain giving her internationalist contribution in the defense of the Spanish Republic.

Ruth was a faithful collaborator of the Cultural Center that bears Pablo's name. She gave various conferences spreading in Cuba and in other countries the life and work of the hero of Majadahonda. She traveled to Spain on several occasions, where she participated in days of homage to Pablo de la Torriente Brau and in remembrance of the anti-fascist fighters of the Spanish Republic.

Her birth took place in the city of Santiago de Cuba on June 17, 1915.
