Havana ephemeris. September 20.

 1887. Pablo Miquel Merino is born in Havana.

Professor of Mathematical Analysis at the University of Havana, he was the author of brilliant texts on the discipline. He was also considered by his colleagues as the representative par excellence of the then small community of Cuban professionals dedicated to physical-mathematical sciences.

He was appointed President of the Cuban Society of Physical and Mathematical Sciences when it was founded in 1942.

In 1979, the Cuban Mathematical Society instituted the "Pablo Miquel" award to reward Cuban mathematicians who have accomplished outstanding work in their specialty.

He died in the Cuban capital on April 3, 1944.

 

2008. A meeting of the Latin American Federation of Journalists is held in Havana and it issues a declaration of solidarity with journalists and the Cuban people in the face of the dramatic situation experienced as a result of hurricanes Gustav and Ike.

 

2009. The Peace Without Borders Concert is held in Havana.

On a stage built in the historic Plaza de la Revolución, and in the presence of more than a million Cubans, artists from Spain, Puerto Rico, Ecuador, Italy and Cuba joined their voices.

This concert was broadcast live to different parts of the world through the Cuban television signal placed for free use on the satellite.

 

2013.  Eduardo Torres dies in Havana.

He was a cameraman, documentary film director and journalist who worked for many years in the Film Section of the Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces. His death was due to cardiovascular complications.

He fulfilled important missions as a war correspondent in various countries, as well as inside Cuba during the October Crisis, the fight against bandits in the Escambray and the provocations at the Guantánamo naval base against our people. De la Torre, born in Havana, concluded his studies in journalism in 1981. For his professional work he received numerous awards, including the Replica of the Machete of Generalissimo Máximo Gómez, the Distinction for National Culture and the Félix Elmuza Distinction, from the Union of Cuban Journalists.
