1953. José Antonio Presno Bastiony dies in Havana.

He was a medical surgeon who organized an Experimental Surgery room at the Calixto García Hospital, intended for student practices with animals. He introduced the preservation of corpses by means of formalin and studied the anatomical technique and operations on the deceased. From his investigations into the corpses many important works would emerge. Thanks to his diligent scientific work, he collected multiple pieces for the Anatomical Museum.

His birth occurred in the town of Regla, Havana, on March 19, 1876.

 

1958. In the early hours of the morning, forces of the Batista dictatorship in the area of ​​El Juanelo, in Havana, guided by a traitor, break into a house where the young revolutionaries Alberto Álvarez, Reinaldo Cruz, Onelio Dampiel and Leonardo Valdés were staying. as well as Lidia Doce Sánchez and Clodomira Acosta.

The youths were tortured and finally riddled with bullets. The two women were taken to a police station. In the following days they were subjected to torture to try to get them to denounce other combatants, but when they couldn't get them to talk, they were finally killed and their bodies were even made to disappear into the sea.

 

1976. Gonzalo de Quesada y Miranda dies in Havana.

He was a lawyer and journalist biographer of José Martí. Until his death, he dedicated himself to continuing the beautiful work of research and studies on the life of Martí, initiated by his father, being considered the most documented bibliographer of the Cuban National Hero. During the pseudo-republic, the prestigious historian did not find official support for the development of his research. After the revolutionary victory in 1959, he found wide support to unify the Martí documents and thus new editions of the Complete Works of José Martí began to be published.

His birth took place in the Cuban capital on March 2, 1900.

 

1995. Elio Constantin Alfonso dies in Havana,

He began his journalistic life in 1939 as a proofreader and sports assistant in the newspaper "El Pueblo". He works in the publications Carteles, Prensa Libre, Luz and Diario Nacional, before 1959.

After the triumph of the Revolution, he worked at the Revolution newspaper and later, at the Granma newspaper, where he worked for more than 20 years. He was a columnist, editor-in-chief, reporter and head of the sports pages in those newspapers and in Granma he also performed the functions of Deputy Director.

His birth took place in the town of Hatuey, province of Camagüey, on February 4, 1919.

 

1980. The prominent journalist Lorenzo Luís Gomez Wangüemert.dies in Havana.

Born in Santa Cruz de La Palma, Canary Islands, on April 15, 1901, he moved to Havana when he was 16 years old and came to feel like just another Cuban.

Since he was a child, he had as premises the rectitude in the principles and the honesty above all. He was a firm and respected man. He tried to always be accurate and honest in his assessment of different facts and situations.

After the triumph of the Cuban Revolution in 1959 he was director of the newspaper "El Mundo" and also an international commentator for the National Television Newscast. He was a member of the Communist Party of Cuba.
