Havana ephemeris. September 9.

1901.

José Manuel Pérez Cabrera is born in Havana.

Graduated with a Doctorate in Civil Law, Philosophy and Letters from the University of Havana, he was a tenured professor of geography and universal history in institutes in Havana and founding professor and dean of the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters of the Catholic University of Santo Domingo. Thomas of Villanueva. He held the direction of Teaching of the Ministry of Education and founded and directed its official organ, the Education Magazine.

He was director of publications and secretary of the Cuban Academy of History, president of the Cuban-Costa Rican Institute of Culture and corresponding member of the Mexican Society of Geography and Statistics.

 He was the author of the essay “The origins of English theater” and in collaboration with José Rasco Bermúdez wrote “The great creators of the Cuban nationality”.

His death occurred in Havana on August 28, 1969.

 

1910. Rafael Trejo González is born in San Antonio de los Baños, then province of Havana.

In his revolutionary work at the University, he is linked to the actions carried out by the student body against the tyranny of Machado, for the recognition of university autonomy and for carrying out the plan of reforms and purification of the teaching staff.

In the 1930 university elections he was elected vice president of the Law School Student Association.

He was assassinated on Infanta Street in Havana on September 30, 1930 when the dictatorship of Gerardo Machado repressed a demonstration in which he participated along with other revolutionary comrades. He was buried on October 2, 1930, accompanied by a crowd of students and people who chanted slogans against the dictator Machado.

 

1971. The National Museum of Music was founded in Havana..

It is an institution dedicated to the historical development of music and musical instruments from the 16th to the 20th century in Cuba. Its collections treasure folk musical instruments, rare instruments, scores of fundamental pieces of the country, musical machines as well as works of art.

It currently has ten exhibition halls, five permanent and five transitory. The permanent exhibition halls cover the following themes: Mechanical Instruments (a journey through the history of the world of sound that includes plectrum cylinder music boxes, perforated plates, player piano rolls, phonographs, etc.); Afro-Cuban instruments (linked to the cults of African origin established in Cuba); Cuban Instrumental Ensembles (belonging to the second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th); Organology (families of folk instruments from various areas of the world); Setting (unique pieces of great artistic value that belonged to the musician Hubert de Blanck).

The building is currently undergoing a restoration process.

 

1979. The Sixth Summit Conference of Non-Aligned Countries is closed at the Convention Center in Havana.

In the opening part of the speech delivered by Commander in Chief Fidel Castro, he stated: “In this Conference, the spirit of solidarity has shone like never before. In this Conference there has not been a single just cause, a single aspiration of our peoples that has not received the maximum consideration and the maximum support. At this Conference, the problems of peace have been discussed as never before. At this Conference, there has been more talk than ever about the problems of the economy, about which it has been rightly said that it should be the center of our concerns and our work.”
