Havana ephemeris. August 30th.

1890. Nicolás Ruíz Espadero dies in Havana.

His birth also took place in Havana on February 15, 1832.

From the stage of his childhood, his aptitude for the piano was evidenced, in which he took refuge years later in a dramatic adolescence due to the unexpected death of his father, which plunged him into a neurosis accentuated with the course of the years.

Without apparently known cause, the young man gradually withdrew from artistic life, despite the applause that was lavished on him, until he became a solitary being.

Although away from concert halls for a long time, he composed more than 50 pieces of music for piano, violin and piano and two chamber works, and was a piano teacher.

Among his works are the entitled Song of the slave, Song of the peasant, The poet's lament, Song of the soul and The fall of the leaves.

José Martí made reference to the life and work of Nicolás Ruíz Espadero in a literary artistic evening of the Hispano-American Literary Society of New York held on March 3, 1891 in homage to the notable Cuban pianist and composer.

He affirmed that he imprisoned in his notes, as in a net of fine crystal, the suffering spirits, who watch and demand from the shimmering and tremulous ether of the American sky.

And alluding to the death of Espadero, he stated: "I would not even lament the disappearance of this illustrious composer from this world, because dying, when a little love has already been earned, is so appealing and just how shameful and useless it is to leave life without having deserved rest from it with work and goodness.”
