1834. Rafael Sixto Casado y García de Alayeto is born in Havana.

He was a teacher who devoted himself diligently from his early youth until his physical disappearance, to train men for the country. His welcoming staff, his teachings and the daily examples of the behavior of the teaching staff aroused enthusiasm and love from his students.

He was in charge of José Martí's education from the age of 9. He incorporated knowledge and conduct into the intellect and consciousness of his disciple.

He died in Havana on June 7, 1870.

 

1895. Ernesto Lecuona is born in Guanabacoa, Havana.

Through his existence he became one of the most prestigious Cuban musicians and composers. It is estimated that he authored nearly 600 musical pieces, many of which achieved notable popularity. Also in his piano work, Cuban dances stand out.

He is also considered the initiator of what is now known as Afro-Cuban music.

He passed away on November 29, 1963 in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain.

 

1945. Digna Guerra is born in Havana.

She made her first studies at the Havana Conservatory where she began the piano specialty. Years later she enrolled in the Choral School of Havana where she graduated in choral conducting and choral singing. She then travels to Germany where she concludes higher studies in Choral Conducting, Piano and Singing. In this institution she obtained the highest grades in all specialties.

In her professional work in Cuba, she has been Director of the National Choir and professor at the Higher Institute of Art.

In 1981 she founded the Chamber Choir Entre Voces, a group with which she has won numerous international awards. This choral group stands out for its sound quality and the highly refined interpretation of works from the universal repertoire.

She directs the Singing Project of the National Choir of Cuba, which brings together hundreds of children who make up a children's choir and a youth choir.

 

1949. The National Congress for Peace and Democracy began in Havana with the attendance of 2,500 delegates from all over the country. It was in session until the 8th and the executive of the Permanent National Committee for the Defense of Peace and Democracy was constituted. Fernando Ortíz was elected as president. In December 1959 the organization was restructured and the Cuban Movement for Peace and the Sovereignty of the Peoples was born. It is a non-governmental organization. It has consultative status in the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations Organization. In 1986 he was conferred the honorable distinction of Messenger of Peace by the United Nations in the International Year of Peace.
