Sweeps Cuba in Havana Taekwondo Open

Led by Olympic bronze medalist and two-time world champion Rafael Alba, the hosts left no doubt of their strength and dominated by far, followed by the Dominicans, other top fighters.

In addition to the triumph of the super heavyweight from Santiago, the victories of Bernardo and Luis Pie from Quisquey stood out against Peruvian Braulio León and Cuban Brian José Cantero, respectively, according to the institutional sports publication Jit.

Previously, Cuba conquered practically all the titles in poomsae (imaginary combat), especially the stars Darío Enrique and Diego Enrique Navarro, as well as Pedro Pablo Escalona and Tania Indira Delgado, among others, in a specialty in which only the Nicaraguan Sofía Verdugo was able to snatch a gold medal from the Cubans, in a tough bid with the local Karen Alejandra del Valle.

The Open, sponsored by the international World Taekwondo federation and the first of its kind in the nation, continues this Sunday with combats, before opening the way to the III Taekwondo Festival of Cuba.
