1930. Jorge Risquet Valdés is born in Los Pinos, Havana.

From the time of his youth he was linked to the insurrectional struggle against the dictatorial regime of Fulgencio Batista. He was arrested on several occasions and subjected to torture. Later he joined the Rebel Army. He was part of the Second Eastern Front led by Commander Raúl Castro, where he reached the rank of Captain. After the triumph of the Revolution in 1959, he carried out several responsibilities in the Revolutionary Armed Forces, in the Revolutionary Government and in the Communist Party of Cuba. He fulfilled important internationalist missions in the Congo and Angola.

In 1988 he headed the Cuban delegation to the quadripartite negotiations Angola - Cuba - United States - South Africa that led to the signing of agreements at the United Nations that guaranteed the independence of Namibia, the security of Angola and peace among the countries of Southwest Africa.

Risquet passed away in the Cuban capital on September 28, 2015.

 

           

2000.   Outstanding chess player Eleazar Jiménez Zerquera died in Havana.

He became an emblematic figure of chess in the country. He was several times champion of Cuba.  He achieved the title of International Master, which was conferred on him in 1963. In that year he became the first Cuban chess player to be honored in the Aula Magna of the University of Havana. He was also three times Pan-American champion. He played in seven Olympiads, five of them defending the first board of the national flag.

The development of chess in Cuba owes him a lot. He worked for many years at the Chess Academy of the University of Havana. After retiring from active chess, he served as National Commissioner and President of the Cuban Chess Federation.

He was born in the city of Ciego de Avila on June 25, 1928.
