1949. Ramón Guirao dies in Havana.

He was born in the town of Cabañas, in the province of Pinar del Rio, on October 11, 1908.

He was among the first authors to publish books dealing with the Negro in poetry. An example is his book entitled Bongó. Self-taught, although a cultivated individual, it is said that his life was somewhat bohemian and far from comfort. He was passionate about the black world and reflected it in his way of speaking and living. He traveled as far as distant Nigeria in his eagerness to learn more about the Yoruba roots, something singular for a man of the first half of the 20th century who, without money, worked for a living.

1958.  The outstanding Cuban artist Rita Montaner dies in Havana. She stood out for her work as an actress and singer.

She was born in the town of Guanabacoa, on August 20, 1900.

During her brilliant artistic career she performed successfully both nationally and internationally. She also appeared in several films and, together with Ignacio Villa, "Bola de Nieve", gave important concerts. His performance in Menotti's opera "La Médium" also caused great repercussion. She was awarded the most honorable titles by her people, who even called her "La Única" (The One and Only).
