Havana anniversaries. March 21, 1837.

1837.  Francisco de Arango y Parreño dies in Havana.

His birth took place in the Cuban capital on May 22, 1765.

Lawyer, merchant and economist, he was a bastion of the Reformism that combined with great success in his political speech the application of the economic science.  He was a leading figure in the political life of Cuba at that time, as evidenced by the many activities he carried out in favor of economic and social development.

He is considered as the first Cuban economist who dedicated his life and intelligence to the objective of achieving favorable measures from the Spanish monarchy for his native land.

 

2001.  The prestigious writer Dora Alonso dies in Havana.

She was born in the town of Máximo Gómez in the province of Matanzas on December 22, 1910.

Twice winner of the Casa de las Americas Award, she received for the transcendence of her vast literary work the National Literature Award and other recognitions such as the Félix Varela Order of the first degree and the José Martí International Prize of UNESCO. He wrote many works for children, adolescents and young people, as well as several novels for radio and television and plays for children.
