Havana anniversaries. March 19th

1876. José Antonio Presno Bastiony was born in the town of Regla, Havana.

In his professional career he was a distinguished physician and university professor. He studied medicine at the University of Havana, where at the age of 21 he was professor of Surgical Anatomy and Operations. For his scientific merits he was an honorary member of medical academies and societies in Paris, Mexico, Brussels, the United States and Spain. For more than twenty years he held the position of president of the Academy of Sciences of Cuba.  He received numerous decorations for his scientific merits. He was the first rector of the University of Havana (autonomous). He organized a room of Experimental Surgery at the Calixto Garcia Hospital, destined to the practice of students with animals. He introduced the preservation of corpses by formaldehyde in the study of anatomical technique and operations on the deceased.  From his research on cadavers many important works would emerge, and there were many pieces obtained for the Anatomical Museum thanks to his meticulous scientific work.

He died in Havana on September 12, 1953,

 

1879. Clemente Inclán Costa was born. 

A specialist in Pediatrics and founder of the journal on the specialty, he was Rector of the University of Havana, where he was exceptionally conferred the title of Rector Magnificent. He was among the members of the Academy of Medical, Physical and Natural Sciences of Havana.

His main scientific production dealt with children's medical pathology and bacteriology. His works had great national repercussion due to the usefulness they brought to Cuban physicians, especially pediatricians.

He died on January 22, 1965.
