He was born in the city of Cienfuegos on May 23, 1913. He was an active revolutionary since he was very young and fought Gerardo Machado dictatorship. He joined the communist association in Cuba, as a member of its youth organization at first and later as a member of the Partido Socialista Popular. He was an outstanding essayist, journalist, historian and researcher of the Cuban and international economy and as an intellectual of highest conditions he tossed for the poor people of the world searching for justice.  After the triumph of the revolution on January 1st, 1959  he continued leading, first the Popular Socialist Party, then as a member of the Dirección Nacional de las Organizaciones Revolucionarias Integradas and the Partido Unido de la Revolución Socialista de Cuba.

He was elected member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba since 1965. When the first congress of the Party was held, ten years after, he was elected member of the Political Board and the Secretarial, respectively. Due to his merits and support to the development of the Revolution he was awarded the Orden “José Martí.
