Ramón Meza dies.

He was born on January 28, 1861 in Havana into a family that had economic resources and also had a long intellectual tradition. Throughout his professional life he developed a significant work as a journalist since he collaborated with several Cuban publications. He wrote several novels, among them, the one entitled (My uncle the employee).  When he passed away, he left several unpublished texts. He bequeathed to the letters and history of the homeland not only valuable biographical studies, but also transmitted to posterity several works of distinguished and old Cuban writers, such as Cirilo Villaverde, Manuel González del Valle, María de las Mercedes Santa Cruz y Montalvo, the Countess of Merlín and others.

Manuel González Del Valle

He was born in Havana on October 16, 1802. He was a writer and professor of great prestige among the Havana intelligentsia of his time. He collaborated in several publications. He died in Havana on January 17, 1884.

María de las Mercedes Santa Cruz y Montalvo

She was born in Havana on February 5, 1789. She became known as the Countess of Merlin. She wrote several books among which are Sor Inés and Mis doce primeros años in which she makes reference to her childhood experiences when she studied in the convent of Santa Clara. She also wrote about the problem of slavery in the Spanish colonies. Particularly moving was his work related to his trip to Cuba. In this book titled Viaje a La Habana, his love for the land of his birth is reflected when he states: "What more sacred right than to live in the soil where one was born? The only indisputable property of man should be this: the homeland."
