He was born in the town of Colon in the province of Matanzas, on January 18, 1853. He was an outstanding patriot and at the same time a notable Cuban doctor, professor and scientist. He specialized in the field of Obstetrics and Gynecology. As a man of science he obtained notable recognitions and left an appreciable written work in the field of the aforementioned branches of medicine. At the same time, he contributed to the efforts to achieve Cuba's independence. He participated in the three wars of the 19th century, the Ten Years' War, the Chiquita War and the War of 95.

War of 95

It was the armed action organized by José Martí to achieve the definitive independence of Cuba. It began on February 24, 1895. Beforehand, during several years José Martí, developed a systematic and fruitful work in order to reorganize the mentioned war that lasted until the year 1898.
