Gilberto Silva Taboada is born.

He was an outstanding scientist with a long and fruitful career. He contributed with relevant contributions to mast zoology, especially in the order of the Chiroptera, as well as in cave fauna and in the musicology of Cuban natural history. He was a member of the Speleological Society of Cuba since its foundation in 1949. He developed a special interest in the study of bats. His knowledge of Cuban caves and bats allowed him to represent the country in 1959 in the joint venture for the exploitation of bat guano, under the orders of Commander Ernesto Che Guevara.
