Julio Sangüily is born.

He was the protagonist of relevant patriotic actions during the independence struggles. In recognition of his combative merits, he reached the rank of Major General of the Liberation Army. The rescue of Sangüily by Mambi forces under the command of Ignacio Agramonte was one of the most heroic and audacious pages of our history. He died in Havana on March 23, 1906.

Liberation Army

Also known as the Mambí Army, it constituted the armed revolutionary movement during the different stages of the struggle for independence against Spanish colonialism. Its initial nucleus emerged during the Ten Years' War in 1868. Years later, in 1895, when the war was resumed, Major General Máximo Gómez Báez was its General in Chief until the end of the battle.
