The statue of Benito Juarez is unveiled.

A statue of the Meritorious of the Americas Benito Juarez is unveiled on Presidents Avenue, former G Street. The statue is made of marble and reflects Juarez with his austere, severe and grand image. It is an almost faithful replica of the one that was placed in front of the Congress of Oaxaca, home state of the former President of Mexico.

Benito Juarez

He was born in Mexico on March 21, 1806. Of indigenous origin, he was a lawyer and politician. He reached the Mexican presidency on several occasions. He is known as the Benemérito de las Américas ( the Meritorious of the Americas). A phrase of his became famous: "Among individuals, as among nations, respect for the rights of others is peace". He died in Mexico on July 18, 1872.
