He was born in the area of the present Cerro municipality, in Havana, on February 2, 1893. He was a writer, poet and theatrical animator who wrote a vast literary work, which included plays and poems, as well as narratives, newspaper articles and the creation of sainetes and zarzuelas. As a playwright and promoter of the Cuban lyric theater, his works were always linked to characters of the people. He was the creator of zarzuela plots, operettas, lyrics for romanzas and songs. In this last genre, his inspirations together with Graciano Gómez stand out. As a lyricist he formed other authorial duos with outstanding musical composers such as Jorge Anckermann and Ernesto Lecuona.

Graciano Gómez

He was an outstanding Cuban musician and composer, born in Havana on February 28, 1895. He was a member of the Matancero quintet in which Barbarito Diez sang.  As a composer he cultivated diverse genres, among them, the son, the pregón, as well as the bolero.  He also musicalized verses of well-known poets. He created more than 300 works. He died in Havana on May 22, 1980.

Jorge Anckermann

He was born in Havana on March 22, 1877. He was a pianist, double bass player, violinist, music teacher, orchestra conductor and composer.  He is catalogued as the most prolific of our composers since it is estimated that he created around four thousand works. In the famous Alhambra Theater, the main stage of his successes, he premiered ¨La isla de las cotorras¨ and other notable works. He was also the author of numerous songs and boleros and is credited with the creation of the guajira. He died in Havana on February 3, 1941.
