He grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a guitarist and pedagogue and his mother a violinist and singer. He composed his first songs at the age of 13. His musical work consists of songs, music for cinema, theater, television series and the orchestration of many of his creations. He was also the author of more than 20 liner notes for Cuban music recordings.  He made several records for the AREITO label of the Empresa de Grabaciones y Ediciones Musicales, EGREM, and was the musical producer of several of its phonograms, as well as some of those of other artists. He was one of the founders of the Cuban New Trova Movement. He died in Havana on August 7, 2005.

It constituted one of the most important facets of Cuban music. It was an aesthetic phenomenon born in the second half of the 1960s in Cuba. It was the continuation of previous trova movements such as the so-called traditional trova and feeling. In its context emerged some and developed others of the most developed popular song genres.
