THE NEIGHBORHOOD OR TOWN OF CALABAZAR

Among the neighborhoods of certain celebrity that are part of the outskirts of Havana is the one called Calabazar, which is part of the municipality of Boyeros since 1976. About the history of the name of Calabazar there is a version that oral tradition has transmitted, which attributes that denomination to the fact that, during one of the frequent floods of the Almendares River, some carts carrying small fruits to the Havana market were detained in its vicinity. As the flood lasted for days and the bridge had not yet been built, the wagon drivers had to remain in the place until the river went down, so they were forced to prepare food whose residues and seeds were thrown on its banks, which, upon finding fertile land, grew rapidly.

It was precisely the pumpkin that spread the most due to its adaptation to humidity and thus the place became a thick pumpkin patch. From then on this site was identified as "Río del Calabazar" or "Paso del Calabazar" because of the abundance of this fruit in the section crossed by the road to Batabanó, today's road to Bejucal.

Then the "boyeros" in their commercial trips from the interior to the capital were in charge of spreading the expression that the force of the custom turned into a denomination for this part of the river and for the primitive sugar mill erected in its vicinity.  Years later the name was extended to the small hamlet on the riverbank, which from the beginning began to be called "Aldea del Calabazar", or simply Calabazar, as it is known today.  The foundation of the village was not formalized until the decade of the 30's of the XIX century, when the number of new constructions increased.

Boyeros Municipality

The Boyeros municipality has an area of 134.2 square kilometers. Its relief is almost entirely flat with undulations that form small plateaus and some heights towards the southeast belonging to the foothills of the Bejucal-Madruga-Coliseo-Limonar group. The history of this municipality is linked from its remote origin to that of Havana. It acquired greater connotation as its communication routes grew, first with the southern royal road and then with the coming into operation of the railroad in 1837. This municipality is home to the José Martí International Airport, the largest and most important in the country, inaugurated in 1930. There is also a monument complex in Cacahual, where the remains of the great Cuban independence fighter Antonio Maceo and his assistant Francisco Gómez Toro were secretly deposited in December 1896.
