Pelayo Cuervo is born in Havana

He was a revolutionary leader and politician critical of the tyranny of Fulgencio Batista. He stood out as a patriot and was part of the Cuban People's Party (Orthodox). He also served as a senator. He was assassinated in 1957, after a brutal beating at the hands of the armed forces of the Batista tyranny. His elimination was part of the repression unleashed against the opponents of the dictatorship, after the assault on the Presidential Palace by the members of the University Directory.

University Directory

It was a revolutionary organization of insurrectional character that emerged in Cuba during the struggle against the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista. It was created and led by José Antonio Echeverría at the University of Havana in 1955. José Antonio was then the President of the University Student Federation at that educational center.
