Antonio Nuñez Jimenes dies.

He was born on April 20th, 1923 in the town of Alquizar, in the current province of Artemisa. He was an outstanding Cuban geographer and speleologist. He created the Cuban Speleologists Society (and was its president and director of its museum. He was devoted to the study of speleology and geography in Cuba. He went around the Cuban territory in several expeditions and even studied every isolated and less known corners. He took part in the expeditions in the polar areas of the world and in a very significant one done in a canoe from the Amazonas to the Caribbean. He created a Foundation related to nature and man that took his name after his death.

Alquizar

It is the main town in the municipality having the same name and is located in the province of Artemisia. Its name is due to the last name of its founder, the captain Sancho de Alquízar.

Province of Artemisa

It has an agricultural surface of more than 270 thousand hectares which allow it to produce food to assure its demands and supports the capital of the country. It has a population of more than 500 thousand inhabitants and a surface of more than 4 thousand kilometers.

Cuban Speleologists Society

It was created by the Doctor Antonio Núñez Jiménez on January 15th, 1940. His goal was to study everything related to the subterranean world in the different manifestations, as well as the context and the people who lived or live interrelated in these areas. At the beginning, the members of this Society were devoted to make expeditions and studies in places near the capital of the country. Later on they started to widen the area of operations of their explorations.
