During the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista, Periódico Hoy was closed.

It was the organ of the Popular Socialist Party, edited for the first time on April 30, 1938, although it was not published until May 16 of that same year. Its objective was always popular, it was at the service of the defense of the people's interests, which is why its editorial office was closed and assaulted on several occasions. After the triumph of the Revolution, the newspaper was published again and continued to be published until October 3, 1965, when the Granma newspaper, official organ of the Communist Party of Cuba, was founded.
