Ramón de Palma y Romay dies in Havana

He studied Latin, Philosophy and Jurisprudence in  the Seminary San Carlos and San Ambrosio . He finished his university studies and got a lawyer degree in 1842. Due to his link with Domingo del Monte, concerning their works and lives as well as their ideas,  he is considered one of the most faithful students of this intellectual. He was a Cuban – Spanish poet, story writer, playwright, essayist and journalist. Because of his short stories and novels he was famous in the Cuban literature. He expanded his work to poetry and many of his poems were included in the Cuban Romanticism anthologies. 

Seminary San Carlos and San Ambrosio

It is the institution for higher studies of the Catholic Church and was founded in 1689.  It was initially located in the Historic Center of Havana. The enormous building has two facades; one is facing San Ignacio Street and the other is facing San Telmo Street. The Cultural Center Felix Varela is now in this building. The new construction for the Seminary was opened in Guanabacoa Municipality on November 3rd, 2010.

Domingo del Monte

He was born in Maracaibo, Venezuela, on August 4th,1804.His parents moved to Cuba since he was a child and  he lived in Havana most of his life. He studied at the Seminary San Carlos and San Ambrosio and the presbyter Félix Varela was his professor. He started his law studies at the University of Havana in 1820.He was very influential in the intellectual movement in Cuba and had an intense intellectual life. He was in charge of organizing literary gatherings, where those present read their works to be improved later. He also collaborated with several publications. He had to leave Cuba in 1845 been accused of taking part on a conspiracy known as la Escalera. He goes to Madrid in Spain and dies nine years after, on November 4th, 1853. His remains were brought to Havana later.
