Nicolás Guillén Batista dies in Havana.

He was born on July 10, 1902 in the city of Camagüey. He was a Cuban journalist, poet and politician considered by his work as the National Poet of Cuba. His poetry is qualified as the fullest expression of the legitimate and revolutionary popular aspirations in the historical period in which it is produced. He introduced the black theme in Spanish language poetry. His work has been translated into many languages and has deserved praiseworthy comments and studies of outstanding personalities of contemporary literature. He knew how to fully interpret the fighting spirit of human beings, and their hope to conquer a better society. Nicolás Guillén was also the founding president of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba. Guillén was also a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and a deputy to the National Assembly of People's Power. As a revolutionary intellectual, he participated and represented our country in various international events and also offered conferences and recitals in different parts of the world.
