Fernando Ortiz is born in Havana.

In the course of his life he became a lawyer.  He also practiced journalism, but above all he stood out for having been a keen student of the Afro-Cuban cultural historical roots. His work reveals his political and sociolinguistic concerns. He was a scientist of very wide spectrum, although his most significant contribution was in the field of ethnography. For his outstanding work he has been described as the Third Discoverer of Cuba. He stimulated and participated in the creation of several institutions, among them the Society of Folklore and the Society of Afro-Cuban Studies and also founded different magazines. He was also President of the Economic Society of Friends of the Country between 1924 and 1952. He died in Havana on April 10, 1969.
